How to do it without the handbrake: 1) Push on break and clutch at the same time (foot brake) 2) Start releasing the clutch slowly until you feel the engine change the noise it makes and the back dips a bit 3) Release brake all the way and put foot on gas. 4) press gas a little and start releasing the clutch slowly

Never had a Problem with this after driving school. My new car now has a hillhold function, it keeps braking till the power on the wheels is more than the force that pushes the car backwards. So in newer manuals none should have any problems.

The real art of driving a manual transmission is when you are able to use the clutch on a step hill as a brake and not even using the handbrake to move up. That's when you know you really can feel your car. Handbrake start and automatic are for pussies. Real men can go up hill only using the clutch and if your car has enough HP you can do it even without pressing the gas pedal!

Tip: pull your hand brake but don't lock it. Keep your hand on it. Then, slowly release the clutch while slowly steping on the accelerator. When you feel the car wants to move, release the hand brake, the rest of the clutch, and accelerate as needed.
